Shrove Tuesday is known by many names around the world including Mardi Gras, Carnival, Fat Tuesday and Pancake Day. The tradition of Shrove Tuesday derives from medieval Christianity. On this day, Christians would enjoy one last day of feasting by using up all their eggs, butter, and milk -all of which were forbidden during the forthcoming Lent - to make pancakes and pastries.
Pour Faire des Crêpes
* 2 cups milk * 2 eggs well beaten * 1 ¼ cups flour * 1 tsp salt * 1tbsp melted butter
- Use a non-stick frying pan. The mixture should be very thin and runny.
- Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl and place the batter in the refrigerator for at least two hours.
- Spray the pan with cooking spray ( or melt some butter). Heat the pan over medium-high heat.
- When the pan is hot pour enough batter just to thinly coat the pan – while turning the pan to swirl the batter until it covers the bottom.
- Cook over medium heat until brown ( approximately1- 2 minutes), then flip over and brown the other side.
- Cook the flip side until golden brown and turn onto a plate. Before making the next crepe re-spray or butter the pan.
- Before serving, fold each crepe . If you are adding topping, add the topping and then fold.
Mardi Gras is celebrated with street processions, fancy dress and masquerade, the most famous which would have to be the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro and the Venetian Masquerade.
