Spanish children all over the world celebrate Halloween in a very colourful and "sweet" way. Candy and skulls are a big part of it!

Children in our Spanish lessons have had great fun with "El Chocolate" this week. Check out our chocolate song in Spanish on Babelzone and let us know if you made anything yummy!

DID YOU KNOW ...

The history of chocolate dates back to early Mesoamerican civilizations. About 3100 years ago the Olmec Indians were growing cacao beans. The Mayans and Aztecs also grew cacao and developed chocolate drinks. Christopher Columbus can claim the credit for being the first person to bring cocoa beans to Europe in the early 1500s, and chocolate drinks became popular in Spain.

But ... the first chocolate drinks were not sweet ... imagine that!!

Our Spanish clubs members are learning about "El Dia de los Muertos" (The Day of the Dead) in Spanish lessons in Australia and New Zealand. On Babelzone they can watch the Skeleton song in Spanish too!

Officially commemorated on November 2 (All Souls' Day), the three-day celebration actually begins on the evening of October 31. It is a joyous and happy holiday, designed to honour the dead and to remember friends and family who have died. The celebration varies from region to region but one of the most common customs is the making of elaborate altars to welcome departed spirits home. The altars are decorated with candy, flowers, photographs, fresh water and samples of the deceased's favorite foods and drinks. Vigils are held, and families often go to cemeteries to fix up the graves of their departed relatives.. The grave is then adorned with flowers, wreaths or paper streamers. Festivities also frequently include traditional foods such as pan de muerto (bread of the dead), which can conceal a miniature skeleton.
